The Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS III USM is a professional telephoto zoom lens for Canon full-frame and APS-C DSLR cameras. A gallery of sample images taken with the Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS III USM lens mounted on a Canon EOS 5DS R camera body.
Canon recently introduced two new extenders, the EF 1.4x III extender, and the EF 2x III extender. These new extenders were redesigned, and optimized to work very well with the new range of Canon telephoto lenses. I did use the new 2x III extender on the new 300, and found that it did work well.
The long focal length and superior optics makes this lens ideal for avian photography. The original EF 600mm f/4 IS was a very sharp lens and it performed very well with the Canon EF extenders, including the latest EF 1.4X and 2X extender III. Despite great optics and the versatility to cover focal lengths from 600mm to 1200mm, the original EF
The lens you describe, the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III which often comes in a kit with the EOS Rebel T7, is not compatible with either EF extender. The EF Extenders can only work with the lenses which have clearance in the back to allow space for the extender's protruding element to sit inside. The rear lens element of your lens will come into
Canon Extender EF 1.4X III - posted in DSLR, Mirrorless & General-Purpose Digital Camera DSO Imaging: I am thinking about getting one of these to use with my 200mm f/2.8L II USM lens. This would give me 280mm at about f/4. Its compatible with the 200mm lens. I will be using it with my 6D and 5DMkIV. Would this extender introduce too much distortion in astrophoto images?
In reply to birdbrain • Mar 8, 2021. For zooms like the 100-500, no. I have owned every version of the EF 100-400 & 70-200 f2.8 and I was near happy with the results of the 2x extenders. The 2x extender can add value on the EF Big Whites, you will loose some IQ but the results are acceptable (and at f8 in most cases).
Just the 70-200 @ 200mm and the Canon Extender Mark III. The Extender is fairly large so it adds a good amount of length to the Canon EF 70-200mm L 2.8 IS lens. Because of this, you should try to use a tripod whenever possible and when you do, attach the tripod mount to the lens and not the camera body to prevent damaging the lens contacts.
The more recent EF 1.4x Mk III and EF 2x Mk III Extenders don't stack together because Canon was attempting to discourage this. Using TWO extenders at once has a dramatic and destructive effect on light transmission (towards the edges of the optics) and optical integrity.
The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens has an excellent focal length range that includes the longest focal length found in a Canon zoom lens - 400mm. This long focal length and focal length range combine with very good image and build quality to make the 100-400 L one of the most popular serious wildlife and sports lenses Canon sells.

An f/2.8 lens can take a 2x TC and still be only an f/5.6 aperture, so it will still AF on any Canon body. These are certainly more expensive than the $1800 100-400 L, but older used ones can often be found on eBay and Craigs List for around $3000 to $3500 (original non-IS versions), and starting around $3500 to as much as $6000 (IS versions).
